THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The NSS has opposed the reported move to hand over the appointments to the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to the Public Service Commission (PSC). NSS general secretary P.K. Narayana Panicker, in a statement here on Tuesday, described the move as immature and ill advised. He said the TDB was a Hindu religious establishment and job opportunities in it should go to the Hindus by right. It was not fair to hand over the appointments to the PSC. He said the Government had taken over all the properties of the Devaswom. The fixed grant that the Government provided in place of it and the contributions made by devotees were the only sources of revenue of the TDB. It was from this amount that the day-to-day expenses were met and the salary of the staff was given. It was the Board's duty to see that the appointments were not mired in corruption charges. He said there were other religious establishments also which functioned in a similar manner with as much or even higher grant from the Government. He said the Board should fill vacancies in a transparent and fair manner. Instead, the threats to hand over the appointments to the PSC as a sort of reprisal were ill advised. He asked the Board authorities to dispassionately examine the allegations levelled against the TDB and take logical steps to solve them.
