Government moots sports development fund

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: A separate `sports development fund' on the lines of the Chief Minister's Relief Fund is proposed to be set up for generating funds for promotion of sports in the State.

The corporate sector, private agencies and other organisations would be urged to contribute to the proposed fund for which income tax exemption would be sought from the Government of India.

This was decided at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday. It was also resolved to consider the proposal to regularise the services of coaches as per existing rules.

The Chief Minister wanted sports to be made compulsory in the curriculum of all schools and colleges in the State. He also suggested that sports activity at the mandal level should be converged and the lead taken by the Sports Department. The Secretary, Youth Services and Sports, had been asked to formulate proposals for generating a debate in this regard.
