Thiruvananthapuram: A police team has left for Malappuram district in connection with the investigation in the murder of Shyamal Mandal, the Thiruvananthapuram Engineering College student whose body was found in a sack near the National Highway bypass at Thiruvallam in the city on Sunday. Shyamal's father in the Andamans had received a call from Malappuram a few days after his son was reported missing. The police suspect that some persons based in Chennai and hailing from the Andamans had committed the crime. It is suspected that Shyamal's murder was committed in a vehicle or a rented house hired by the assailants. It has now become clear that the killers had demanded ransom from Shyamal's father after killing the student and concealing his body. An empty purse with the address of a woman was found near the spot where the student's body was discovered. The woman had lost her purse along with Rs. 200 a few days ago. A police team is also scheduled to leave for the Andamans.
