Thiruvananthapuram: The Rural police have arrested seven persons, including a panchayat president owing allegiance to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), on the charge of stealing timber from the compound of Navodaya Vidyalaya at Chettachal, near Palode. Dy.SP, Nedumangad, G. Somasekharan Nair, said trees estimated at Rs.9 lakhs were illegally felled under the cover of clearing the undergrowth in the 25-acre plantation forestland vested with the school. The accused in the case include school Principal Haridas, Nandiyode panchayat president and Parents Teacher Association (PTA) member Prabhat Chandran, BSNL employee and PTA member Ambujakshan, Sajikumar, Reghu and Thulasi. The accused were produced before the court on the charges of conspiracy, theft, misappropriation and destruction of evidence. They were remanded to 14 days in judicial custody. Circle Inspector (CI), Palode, S. Rafeek, said the involvement of the accused in the case was revealed when police questioned Thulasi who allegedly paid Rs.3.5 lakhs as advance to the accused persons.
