Staff Reporter

Decision at high-level meeting

Thiruvananthapuram: A Rs.16.7-crore drinking water project for the beach resort of Kovalam and adjoining areas by drawing water from the Vellayani lake is to be implemented jointly by the Capital City Region Development Project and Kerala Tourism.

The project, to be executed by the Kerala Water Authority, will now be forwarded to the empowered committee for final approval. This was decided at a high-level review meeting chaired by Minister for Tourism K.C. Venugopal at Kovalam on Tuesday.

More than half of the Rs.66-crore Samudra Park beautification project had been completed. The park will be commissioned by January. It was decided to take up with Leela Group the proposal to open the walkway from Samudra to Grove beach.

The meeting was informed that the Rs.44-lakh Tourist Facilitation Centre project had been tendered. The centre will be handed over to the Vizhinjam panchayat on the condition that the toilet complex in it will be manned by Sulabh International.

A Rs.88-lakh cleaning drive launched by the panchayat was also discussed. It was decided that experts should be roped in for waste management. The work on the Rs.7.2-crore arts and craft village will begin once the land is transferred.

The Vizhinjam panchayat authorities were asked to immediately report illegal constructions in the tourism zone to the Government. The local body was also asked to take steps to end the menace of vendors on the beaches.

Two aid-posts were sanctioned for the Tourism Police and lifeguards. The walkway will be beautified by paving tiles and more beach umbrellas will be introduced.

All the works will be completed before November 30. Streetlights along the main road, walkway and roads leading to the beaches will be repaired before the end of the month.
