Metro shootout case solved

Staff Reporter

Five persons, including three juveniles, held; hunt on for other gang members

NEW DELHI: Five persons, including three juveniles, have been arrested by the West Delhi police in connection with the shootout in which a private security guard shot dead a man who along with four others was allegedly trying to steal copper wire between two Delhi Metro stations near Patel Nagar in West Delhi on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off, the Patel Nagar police arrested three persons in Kathputli Colony on Tuesday. At their instance, the alleged kingpin of the gang, Mohammad Ansar, and the receiver of stolen property, Dayakishan, were also arrested. The police have seized a Bajaj Chetak scooter, which was allegedly used to ferry the stolen copper wire, and recovered an 82-feet long rope (used for climbing to the elevated section of the Delhi Metro) along with a gunny bag of high quality copper wire (used on the Metro tracks) at the instance of the accused.

According to the police, the accused would climb the elevated section with the help of the rope. They would then cut the wires, fill them in a bag and throw it down. Ansar, who used to be present with his scooter, would then collect the wire and take it to Dayakishan.

On Monday, the private guard, Kamakhya Narayan, had spotted five persons trying to steal copper wire on the stretch between Kirti Nagar and Shadipur metro stations, which are under-construction, around 2-30 p.m. He raised an alarm and also fired in the air.

The thieves then beat a hasty retreat only to return after about 15 minutes with more men. They were armed with country-made revolvers, sticks and stones. Kamakhya warned them once again but they surrounded him and inflicted injuries on his head. Kamakhya then opened fire from his licensed revolver. One of them, later identified as Sikander, was shot dead, while the others escaped.Further investigations are on to identify and arrest other members of the gang.
