PANAJI: The State Government is gearing up to tackle bird flu. Migratory birds visit wetlands and lakes in the State as the winter sets in. The Forest and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services departments have joined hands and stepped up vigilance against the disease. Tulshidas Naik, Director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department, told The Hindu here on Wednesday that the Government does not want to take any chances. The department has been organising awareness programmes about bird flu for the benefit of poultry farmers. He said no cases have been reported so far in the State. The Forest Department has directed all the Range Forest Officers to monitor the arrival of migratory birds. He said his department is conducting a survey and sampling bird serum. Two batches of around 250 samples has now come back from Bhopal with negative results. A team of officials will attend a training programme on bird flu in Pune from Thursday, he said.
