World snooker championship postponed

Karachi: The World Snooker Championship, which was scheduled to be held in Karachi next month, has been postponed in the wake of the devastating earthquake that hit the country on October 8.

"We have been advised by the government and the sponsors to postpone the championship until early next year," Ali Asghar Valika, president of the Pakistan Billiard and Snooker Association, said.

The championship was to be held between November 7 and 17 at the picturesque Arabian Sea Country Club, about 40 km outside Karachi, and had attracted 25 countries.

"Most of the sponsors and government have pumped their funds into the rescue operation, following the October 8 devastation. It is a national tragedy and we realise and understand the situation," Valika said. — PTI
