LYON: Top seed Andy Roddick, who had not won a Tour match since the middle of August, advanced to the second round with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over French wildcard Thierry Ascione in the Lyon Grand Prix on Tuesday. At Basel, third-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain cruised through the opening round of the Swiss Indoors, defeating Italy's Filippo Volandri 6-2, 6-4. The 2003 French Open champion, making his third appearance in Basel, is looking to win his first title of the season after reaching the finals at Barcelona and Vienna. Last week, Ferrero lost in the first round of the Madrid Masters to Max Mirnyi of Belarus. ``I felt pretty good on court. I'm playing good indoors for the moment,'' said Ferrero, who has recovered from 98th in the ATP rankings in February to 19th this week. ` `The first set went almost too quickly and the second set was not so easy to finish,'' he added.
Bad run continues
The third-seeded pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Martin Damm suffered a shock defeat in the first round of the St. Petersburg Open, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-7(7) to unseeded duo of Jurgen Melzer and Julian Knowle of Austria. The pair had lost to Leander Paes and Serbian Nenad Zimonjic in the second round of the Madrid Masters last week. The Indo-Czech pair got off to flying start and dropped only three games to race away with the first set 6-3. Bhupathi and Damm allowed the Austrians to level the match by taking the second set with a reverse score-line.

At Linz, eighth seed Ana Ivanovic reached the second round of the Generali Ladies Open with a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory over Japan's Shinobu Asagoe.
