KARUR: Hopes of rescuing two youths of the district washed away in the Cauvery when they tried to save a cow from the gushing waters near here on Tuesday receded with no trace of the duo till late on Wednesday evening. B. Shafi (20) of New Court Street and N. Zia (25) of Kambar Street, along with Amir, Jan and Raja, jumped into the Cauvery to save a cow. Amir, Jan and Raja, managed to swim to safety, while Shafi and Zia could not make their way back in time. The waters carried them away and a search was mounted to locate and rescue the two. A case has been registered in the Kulithalai police station.
Free clothes distributed
Collector A. Karthik has assured all help to the people temporarily relocated in safe places following the flood in the Cauvery. Mr. Karthik launched the free distribution of saris and dhotis to over 110 families of displaced persons at Thavuttupalayam on Wednesday. The District Revenue Officer, M. Mathivanan, distributed saris and dhotis to 101 families relocated at Thirumukkoodalur, 40 families at Vedichipalayam and another 36 families at Peria Kalipalayam. The Karur RDO, N. Vidhya Shankar, participated in the programmes.
