BJP welcomes ban on cow slaughter
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed the Supreme Court judgment upholding the Gujarat Government's order banning the slaughter of bulls and bullocks. The Gujarat High Court in 1998 had held the order unconstitutional.
"Several BJP-ruled States have laws banning cow slaughter. Now that the validity of the Gujarat legislation has been upheld by the Supreme Court, it can be passed by other States also," BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley told reporters here on Wednesday. He said the law had the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave.
The Gujarat Government had passed the order banning the slaughter of bulls and bullocks over the age of 16 in 1994 claiming that cows were being slaughtered under the guise of slaughter of bulls. A seven-member Constitutional Bench, headed by Chief Justice R.C. Lahoti, upheld the order on Wednesday.
