Meeting
The farmers, who have been demanding a rate of Rs. 1,500 a tonne (of sugarcane), have stopped supplying cane to factories in Bijapur and Bagalkot districts for the past two days. As a result, some of the factories, which had started crushing sugarcane, have been forced to stop operations. There are nine sugar factories in the twin districts and some of them are ready to accept farmers' demand though partially. The farmers' contention is that sugar factories are earning a high profit following the hike in sugar prices, and it is just to pass on a part of it to them. Staff Correspondent
