HYDERABAD: As the low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal turned into a depression and lay off the Machilipatnam coast on Wednesday, the State braced itself to face yet another spell of heavy rain. The Government put the districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, East & West Godavari, Nellore, Chittoor and Kadapa on alert. State Met Office Director G. Sudhakar Rao said: "There are chances that the depression may intensify further, but it is too early to predict a cyclone." The Government, however, asked the Collectors of these districts which are likely to be hit in the event of the system becoming a cyclone to take precautionary steps. In-charge Disaster Management Commissioner D. C. Rosaiah said the Collectors had been kept on toes for taking any emergency step, including evacuation of vulnerable habitations. A forecast warned Coastal Andhra and Kadapa and Chittoor districts in Rayalaseema against heavy rain on Thursday and strong gales. It said many places in the two regions would get rain but they would be moderate in Telangana. During the 24-hour period ended 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, Hyderabad airport, Gooty, Hindpur, Piduguralla received 3 cm of rainfall each and Kurnool, Nandigama, Nellore, Pattikonda, Yemmiganur and Vikarabad 2 cm each.
