`Gududeepa Pantha' on Sunday

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Namma Kudla, a Tulu television channel, will organise its annual "Gududeepa Pantha" at the Sri Gokarnanateshwara Kshetra, Kudroli, here on Sunday. The competition was started here six years ago.

Mohan Karkera, director of Namma Kudla, told presspersons here on Wednesday that it is common to see colourfully decorated "gududeepas" strung outside homes during Deepavali. The traditional "gududeepas" made out of bamboo sticks, colour papers and other decoration material have gradually given way to readymade "gududeepas" made out of plastic and other material, he regretted.

He said the scope of the competition has been widened to include religious and cultural values. Only "gududeepas" made at home are eligible for participation. Contestants should bring in their entries to the venue and keep it decorated before 5 p.m. on Sunday. One person can enter as many "gududeepas" — modern or traditional — in the contest as they want. Winners in traditional and modern "gududeepa" categories will receive gold medals. Gurudevananda Swamiji of Sri Kshetra Odiyuru will deliver a lecture on Deepavali. Mijaru Annappa, an artiste, will be given an award.
