Death penalty: Kalam's suggestion

NEW DELHI:
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has called for a "comprehensive policy" on the death penalty after all aspects relating to the death penalty and mercy petitions were discussed in Parliament. He was replying to a question on recent reports on his letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs advising the government to take into account "humanitarian aspects" while making recommendations on granting pardon to those persons who are on death row.
Habibullah sworn in
The President made the statement after a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan in which the he swore in Wajahat Habibullah as the Central Chief Information Commissioner. Mr. Habibullah will head the Central Information Commission constituted under the Right to Information (RTI) Act 2005 that came into force on October 13.
