This Day That Age
The 1955 Nobel Prize for Literature has been awarded to Halldor Kiljan Laxness, the Icelandic novelist and playwright. The award was announced on October 27 by the Swedish Academy consisting of 18 leading Swedish men of letters. Mr. Laxness, a 53-year-old pro-Communist author who wrote his first novel at the age of 17, will receive the award on December 10. It consists of a cheque for 190,214 crowns (13,210 pounds), an illuminated certificate and a heavy gold medal. Mr. Laxness was the closest competitor to Ernest Hemingway for last year's award.
