Notices issued for not providing CET list

Grave injustice caused to students who will lose an academic year

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Delhi Chief Secretary and the Vice-Chancellor, Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University, for not providing the list of Common Entrance Test candidates to the Northern India Engineering College for filling lapsed seats.

A three-judge bench comprising Justice Y.K. Sabharwal, Justice B.N. Srikrishna and Justice R.V. Raveendran issued the notice on a contempt application filed by T.D. Naidu, president of the All-India Medical and Engineering Colleges Association and the NIEC.

The court on September 23 passed an order stating that it would be open to the States to send a list of candidates from among the CET conducted by it or by the consortium of colleges to the colleges (members of the association) concerned within a week. In case such a list was received, the colleges would give admission to those candidates.

Government stand

In the contempt petition, it was submitted that despite several requests, the Delhi Government and Indraprastha University had not provided the list. The university had taken a stand that no student whose rank was above 9,474 in the CET would be admitted to the petitioner college though the apex court had categorically directed that all the remaining seats be filled up on the basis of marks obtained in the higher secondary examination conducted by the CBSE or the State Board.

The petitioners contended that this refusal by the University had caused grave injustice to students who could not take advantage of the vacant seats and would lose one academic year. They pleaded for initiating contempt proceedings against the respondents.
