CHENNAI: Chennai Metrowater has started cleaning up the Pallikaranai Marsh to remove the lush growth of vegetation and grass near the banks of the wetland. In the last week, several workers have been involved in removing the tall "kora" grass with the help of earth moving equipment. Supervisors at the site said the vegetation would be cleared to a distance of forty feet from the marsh's banks. It was similar to the clean-up of the Velachery Lake, one of the water bodies taken up for maintenance by Metrowater, where water hyacinth and other vegetation were removed a few days ago, they added.
Free flow of floodwater
A Metrowater official said that the cleaning up of the marsh was taken up to facilitate free flow of floodwater. This would avoid stagnation of water during rains in neighbouring areas such as Srinivasan Nagar and Ram Nagar. Vegetation to a distance of 2.5 km. along the bank would be cleared to allow free flow of water. The operation would be completed in a week and was part of Metrowater's precautionary maintenance during the monsoon, he added.
