Chautala opposes commission on SYL canal
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) on Thursday criticised the proposed move to set up a commission to resolve the long pending issue of construction of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.
After presiding over a meeting to discuss the issue, INLD president Om Prakash Chautala alleged that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government had entered into a "conspiracy" with Congress-ruled States of Punjab and Haryana to refrain from completing the construction of the SYL canal, which is to carry Indus waters to Haryana.
Mr. Chautala said if the Government set up the proposed commission, the INLD would resort to protests and oppose the move. "There is no need to set up such a Commission," he said after the meeting passed a resolution to this effect.
Referring to the theft of ancient Jain idols from a temple in Haryana, Mr. Chautala said it reflected the deteriorating law and order situation in the State.
He also expressed concern at State agencies not procuring paddy, cotton and bajra from Haryana farmers and depriving them from receiving the minimum support price for these commodities.
