Chandy trying to cover up UDF-BJP links, says Karunakaran `Government not serious in solving Neyyattinkara Bishop's house attack'

Thiruvananthapuram: Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) leader, K Karunakaran, on Thursday accused the UDF Government of vitiating the law and order situation in the State.

Mr. Karunakaran, while addressing a press conference here, referred to the High Court verdict arraigning the Government for encouraging political crimes. He chastised the Government for its failure to implement court verdicts. He said that the least the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who also held the Home portfolio, could do in the light of the court observations was to quit office.

He said that court verdict was an indication that citizens would not get justice from the Government. He said that the Government was not serious in bringing the accused to book in the case relating to the attack on the Neyyattinkara Bishop's house. There was a feeling that the Government had committed a serious lapse. He alleged that there was corruption in giving parole to prisoners. Parole was given overlooking the recommendations of the Director General of Police.

He said that his party would launch an agitation on these issues after the Thiruvananthapuram byelection. In reply to a question, Mr. Karunakaran said that Mr. Chandy had accused him of helping the BJP because he wanted to create a cover for the impending understanding between the UDF and the BJP in the byelections.

Mr. Karunakaran maintained that neither Ramesh Chennithala, KPCC president, nor Mr. Chandy denied his charge that a meeting of the Police Association office-bearers had been held in the KPCC office. He said that the meeting was presided over by Mr. Chennithala.

Asked for his reaction that the Karunakaran-Vijayan axis was trying to stoke passions, the veteran leader retorted that it was the Chandy-Chennithala axis that was in full play. The November 18 byelections would vindicate his stand, he added.
