Belgaum
Staff Correspondent
Belgaum: The Council of the Belgaum City Corporation on Thursday adopted a resolution supporting the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi's demand for transfer of Belgaum to Maharashtra in its first monthly meeting, presided over by Mayor Vijay More. It is noteworthy here that the BCC, which has been under the control of the Marathi speaking corporators, except on one occasion, has been adopting such one-line resolutions on every first monthly meeting of every mayoral term. However, Thursday's resolution seems to have surprised many in the light of the matter on the border dispute before the Supreme Court. The Maharashtra Government has filed a suit demanding transfer of Belgaum to the State. Talking to The Hindu , Mr. More denied that adopting the resolution will amount to contempt of court. However, he defended the resolution stating that the resolution is only "re-assertion" of the lond-pending demand and "feelings" of the Marathi-speaking people of Belgaum. District Kannada Organisations Action Committee President Ashok Chandargi expressed shock and surprise and feared that Council's resolution might amount to contempt of court. .
Little opposition
Ironically, there was very little resistance from the Kannada speaking corporators to the resolution when moved by former Mayor Shivaji Sunthakar. It was only Sunil Kudachi who opposed the resolution stating that none of the Kannada speaking people would be prepared to see Belgaum transferred to Maharashtra.
