TIRUCHI : The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board to speed up the ongoing under-ground drainage works in the city. A resolution adopted at its district council meeting held here recently said that the ditches dug out while executing the UDG had not been closed properly in several parts of the city. The dug out roads should be completely re-laid, the resolution added. The meeting urged revenue authorities to streamline the process of distribution of ration cards to the applicants and also for effecting changes in address, correction in names etc. A large number of card-holders were being made to run from pillar to post to effect the changes, the resolution said. Pointing out that the farming activity would improve this year thanks to the availability of copious irrigation water, the meeting urged the State Government to sanction agricultural credit to the farmers. Farmers, pinning their hopes on the prospects of the crop this season, had taken loans from usury moneylenders. The meeting also wanted implementation of the insurance scheme for the farmers announced by the State Government without any bias. The meeting urged the Government to constitute an official body for implementation of the provisions of the Minimum Wages Act for agricultural labourers. A resolution adopted for the purpose said the provisions were more in breach than in practice, particularly in the case of women labourers. The implementation of the Act had been weakened due to the absence of any official surveillance mechanism, the resolution said. The meeting also demanded speeding up the works on the construction of Palakkarai road over-bridge. The state executive member, G. Rathinavelu, presided over the meeting. The district secretary, S. Sridhar was among those who spoke.
