Chairpersons elected

KOCHI: Chairpersons of the standing committees in the Kochi Corporation Council were elected on Thursday at a meeting chaired by Mayor Mercy Williams. K. J. Sohan was unanimously elected development committee chairman and T.K. Samsuddin welfare committee chief. K. Jemaxi will head committee on health and K.M. Hamsakunju that on public works. E.M. Sunil Kumar was elected chairperson of the town planning panel and K.V. Manoj tax appeal committee. — Staff Reporter

Animal birth control

KOCHI: Maneka Gandhi, MP, will inaugurate a State-level seminar on animal birth control (ABC) programme for dogs, organised by the Department of Animal Husbandry at the National Institute of Oceanography, near the High Court, on Friday. Ms. Gandhi will speak on ABC rules and participate in an interactive session on the topic. The issue is relevant in the light of the increasing number of street dogs, which are causing a big problem to citizens. The number of cases of dog bites has increased. — Staff Reporter

Staff convention

KOCHI: Government employees should cooperate in implementing the policies of the Oommen Chandy Government so that welfare schemes and people-friendly policies reach out to people, said Ludy Luiz, MLA, inaugurating the district convention of the Kerala Panchayat Employees' Organisation. The convention demanded that the Government implement what it had promised during the conciliatory talks on July 16 with panchayat employees when they had gone on an agitation. — Staff Reporter

Science exhibition
