This Day That Age
Pope Pius XII has urged the cinema industry to rid films of "artistic decadence and depravity" so that they could become an effective instrument of spiritual elevation, education and moral improvement. Speaking to the delegates of the International Union of Cinema Proprietors at a congress in Rome on October 28, he said a film was "ideal" if it responded perfectly and harmoniously to the three primordial and essential needs of man - truth, goodness and beauty. He granted that an ideal film might also represent evil, but it should do so with serious intent and in decent form. "The ideal film should therefore shun any form of apology for evil. It should condemn it throughout, not only at the fade-out, which would often be too late after having already seduced the spectator."
