Sania interacts with school children

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: She may have been tired of questions from the media around the world at the end of a long, tough and fruitful season, but Sania Mirza was a good sport as she cheerfully answered questions from star-struck kids in the Capital on Friday.

On a whirlwind visit to the city, Sania watched the ongoing National sub-junior tennis championship at the DLTA Complex briefly and later went to the Panchshila Club and the Siri Fort Complex.

The Hyderabad lass was happy to be present when Fed Cup teammate Ankita Bhambri cut the cake on her 19th birthday.

She praised Team Tennis that has been training Ankita and company, even as she hoped that there would be more players coming from such good programmes.

Jaideep Bhatia of Team Tennis said thousands of players were benefiting from the programme run in 24 academies, including many schools, and that there was a programme for everyone from three-year-olds to veterans past 60. Hundreds of children, and more importantly their parents were thrilled to see the youth icon.

Many parents greeted Sania's mother, Nasima, as well.

On the personal front, Sania has been recovering well from the lower back strain that she had suffered in Thailand.

After the holiday, she is scheduled to train with Tony Roche for three weeks in December before Christmas. She will compete in Hong Kong and Sydney before moving to Melbourne for the Australian Open next season.
