SHIMLA: The "babudom"- dominated sleepy hill town of Shimla witnessed a different kind of function on Wednesday. Hundreds of people gathered at a public felicitation function for Kuldip Singh Tanwar, an IFS officer who has resigned from the State Forest Department and decided to work for the Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti, a leading NGO. A number of representatives from various organisations appreciated the efforts of Dr. Tanwar and said that with the entry of such social activists as full timers, the Peoples' Science Movement in Himachal would be further strengthened. Dr. Tanwar, a Forest Conservator, was working as the Director of State Land Use Board. He had launched a crusade against the forest mafia and even faced a direct confrontation with the State Government on the issue of illicit felling of trees in the State. He had floated the voluntary organisation, Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti, an off -shoot of the Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti. Later, talking to the media persons, Dr. Tanwar unfolded his plans and said that the HGVS would be taking up issues like equality in the society, female foeticide, health privatisation, human- animal conflict and severe problem of vermin's in Himachal.
