THANJAVUR: Steps will be taken to strengthen the Coleroon banks wherever they are weak, Minister for Environment and Forests R.Vaidyalingam said on Friday. He told presspersons that the banks had been weak at Vazhkai in the Papanasam taluk and Anakudi and Okkakudi in the Thiruvaiyaru taluk. "But in all these three places, timely action by people and authorities to strengthen the banks helped to prevent breaches." Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had formed a committee of three Ministers (including Mr. Vaidyalingam) to oversee relief and repairs in Thanjavur and Nagapattinam districts. Minister for Food and Co-operation Pollachi V. Jayaraman and Minister for Fisheries M. Radhakrishnan are the other members. Mr. Vaidyalingam said 25 huts were damaged in floods in villages, and the Government would pay compensation. Paddy raised on 432.50 hectares, banana on 25 hectares and vegetables on 15 hectares were also submerged. A ban would be slapped on indiscriminate building of brick kilns along the banks since they could cause floods and encroachments on rivers would be removed.
