New Delhi: The Supreme Court has upheld a judgment of the Andhra Pradesh High Court setting aside the election of Satrucharla Vijaya Rama Raju in 1999 from Nagaru constituency reserved for Scheduled Tribes. A three-Judge Bench comprising Chief Justice R.C. Lahoti, Justice C.K. Thakker and Justice P.K. Balasubramanyan said that evidence clearly showed that the appellant, Rama Raju, had always considered himself to belong to superior strata of society. Mr. Rama Raju contested from the reserved seat stating that he belonged to Konda Dora community. Nimmaka Jaya Raju challenged his election and the High Court set aside the election. Against this order, Mr. Rama Raju filed a special leave petition in the apex court. Dismissing the appeal, the Bench said, "the appellant wants the best of two worlds. Though he would like to contest from a constituency reserved for the Scheduled Tribes, he would want to lead the life of a forward caste and have the trappings of that caste."
