KOCHI: Basic infrastructure like roads, bridges, water supply and an efficient garbage-disposal system are a must for development of a region, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said. He was speaking after inaugurating the new building for the mini-civil station at Aluva on Friday evening. "It is in this context that the metro rail has been proposed for Kochi, aimed at bettering public transport in the city. The rail and road connectivity to Vallarpadam and the second phase of development of Airport-Seaport Road are in keeping with making available better infrastructure for development projects." Kochi is fast developing towards Aluva and the civil station, which brings different Government offices under one umbrella, gains importance. Of late, the IT sector is looking towards Kochi with optimism and Rs. 16,000 crores of the Rs. 27,000 crores earmarked for Kerala by the Central Government is for Kochi, Mr. Chandy said. The four-storey building spread over 3,920 square metres cost Rs. 3.07 lakhs and would house 13 Government offices. Work was completed in a record period of 18 months.
Computerisation on
Speaking on the occasion, Revenue Minister K.M. Mani said that computerisation process was on in the Revenue Department. Soon, people would be able to get things done through computer from home. PWD Minister M.K. Muneer said that all bad roads would be repaired by January, after the rain subsided. "Roads and bridges will be completed in a time-bound manner," he said.
Flyover sought
Aluva had now become the headquarters of Ernakulam Rural, said Aluva MLA K.Mohammed Ali. "People urgently need a flyover at the railway crossing which now divides the town into two. The canteen at the civil station will be handed over to Kudumbasree. Service organisations must take care not to deface the walls of the new building with posters," he said. District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said that the civil station would fulfil its purpose only if people got a better deal from officials. Earlier, Mr. Chandy also inaugurated the new building for the mini-civil station at Paravoor.
