Pranacharya award for Punjab doctor

CHANDIGARH: The national level Indraprastha Vaid Sabha and the All India Ayurved Congress have selected Punjab's established Ayurved physician, Jagjit Singh, for this year's prestigious Pranachayra Award. The communication to this effect was received here on Friday.

According to a release here, Vaid Singh, an elected member of the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), is the first Ayurvedic physician from Punjab to receive this award which is conferred annually upon professionals who carry out diagnosis and prescribe treatment in accordance with the principles and practices of shashtriya chiktsa (approved norms).

The award would be conferred upon Vaid Singh, at a function scheduled for this year's Dhanwantry Jayanti, on October 30, at the Hindi Bhawan in New Delhi. Jagjit Singh, who claims specialisation in treating chronic ailments at his Vaid Gurbachan Singh Memorial Chandigarh Ayurved Centre, has inherited the profession and various "nuskhas''.

His father, Bhagat Singh and mother Partap Kaur, have their own position of respect in the treatment of various ailments and preparation of Ayurvedic medicines at their native village, Amargarh and the surrounding areas of Sangrur district.

Apart from this, Vaid Singh is also the member of the education committee of the CCIM since 1995, Punjab's Board of Ayurved and Unani System of Medicine since 2001, Panjab University's medical science faculty since 2002, Board of studies for Ayurved in Panjab University since 2005 and president of the Chandigarh chapter of the All India Ayurved Congress.
