PALAKKAD : The Malampuzha Dam Protection Committee in its meeting held here on Saturday has decided to launch a mass agitation from November 10, demanding that the authorities evict encroachers from the 186 acres of Malampuzha Garden tourist complex. In a statement here, Committee Secretary P.S. Panikkar said that the garden and the land on either side of the Malampuzha Irrigation Canals have been encroached upon. The statement said that a guest house has been constructed in an acre near the Malampuzha fisheries office. About 4.4. acres near the Rock Garden 4.4 has been encroached upon. The area had been earmarked for the new Malampuzha bus terminal. The encroached area falls in the security zone under the Defence of India Rule, the Committee said. The water stored in the reservoir was used to irrigate 25,000 acres of paddy fields. The reservoir provides drinking water to 15 lakh persons residing in the Palakkad municipality and the seven adjoining panchayats. Water for the industries in the Kanjikode industrial belt is provided by the dam. Yet, the Water Resources Department which controls the area failed to check the encroachments. Encroachments have also been made upon the catchments and reservoir bed for cultivation during the summer season, the statement added.
