Steps taken to rehabilitate prohibition offenders

Erode district gets award for eradication of illicit distillation

ERODE: The Additional Superintendent of Police, M. Sundararajan, has said that steps were being taken to rehabilitate prohibition offenders in the district.

He told reporters here on Friday that this year the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) arrested 441 men and 71 women for their involvement in illicit distillation of arrack.

They also seized over 20,000 litres of arrack, destroyed 28,559 litres of fermented wash, 639 litres of toddy and 6,840 litres of rectified spirit.

He said that 96 two-wheelers and two four-wheelers used for transportation of illicit arrack were seized and auctioned for Rs. 6.24 lakhs.

Mr. Sundararajan said that due to the stringent action taken against the illicit arrack distillers, the sale of IMFL has risen by 25 per cent.

The district won award for its contribution in eradication of illicit distillation.

The Additional Director General of Police, Enforcement, S. K. Upadhyay, presented a shield, recently. Tiruvallur and Ramanathapuram district also received the shields.

`Operation Sathyagraha'

The launching of `Operation Sathyagraha' in Rayarpalayam, Bangalapudur and Chennimalai area has resulted in nabbing notorious illicit arrack sellers.

As per the instructions of the Superintendent of Police P. Nagarajan jobs were provided to 70 offenders in various spinning and textile garment units.
