VENTING THEIR IRE: Members of Kannada Sainya burning an effigy of the Belgaum Mayor in Gulbarga on Saturday.
GULBARGA: Activists of Kannada Sainya on Saturday took out a procession here and burnt an effigy of the Belgaum City Corporation and Belgaum Mayor for their "anti-Kannada and anti-Karnataka" stand and for passing a resolution seeking the transfer of Belgaum and other taluks to Maharashtra. The activists led by the president of the organisation Somnath Kattimani came in a procession from Goa Hotel to the Deputy Commissioner's office shouting slogans against the Belgaum City Corporation and the Mayor. They staged a rasta roko in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office for 30 minutes before burning the effigy. They submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh, to Deputy Commissioner Anjum Parvez. In the memorandum, they took exception to the resolution passed by the Belgaum City Corporation demanding merger of Belgaum, Karwar, Nippani and Khanapur with Maharashtra. They termed the move as anti-Karnataka and anti-Kannada. They demanded that the State Government initiate criminal proceedings against the Mayor and the members who supported the resolution, and extern them from the State. The Government should also supersede the corporation and protect the interests of the State. They said action should be taken against the Mayor by December 1 failing which they will intensify their agitation.
