Injured in accident

ERODE: President of the Suriampalayam Panchayat `Panjalai' Periyasamy sustained serious injuries when the car in which he was travelling dashed against a lorry on Saturday. Deepavali gifts presented

ERODE : Fifty children undergoing treatment at the Government Headquarters Hospital here was presented with Deepavali gifts. The Erode Idhayam Narpani Trust presented the gifts. Inaugurated

ERODE: Union Minister of State for Industries and Commerce E.V.K.S. Elangovan inaugurated additional school building at Kemmanaickkenpalayam near Sathyamangalam on Friday. The building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 5 lakhs from the MP's Constituency Development Fund. - Staff Reporter

Drowned

ATTUR: A farmer drowned in a stream at Narasingapuram on Saturday. The police said that Ganesan attempted to cross the stream to reach his fields. But he lost control and drowned.

Identity cards

SALEM: The district administration has identified 2,47,609 farmers in the district for the issuance of identity cards under the `farmers security scheme.'

According to Collector A. Sukumaran, the cards will be soon issued to the farmers.- Staff Reporter

Special train

TIRUCHI: The Southern Railway will operate a special train from Kumbakonam to Chennai on October 30.

Train No. 0656 will leave Kumbakonam at 7 p.m. and reach Chennai Egmore at 4 a.m. the next day, according to a Southern Railway spokesman here.

Pensioners' meet

THANJAVUR: A special pensioner's meet was organised by the Bank of India here recently in connection with the bank's centenary celebration. Pensioners were honoured by the presentation of mementoes.

The pensioners shared their experiences and narrated their expectations from banks.

A.B. Vijaya Kumar, branch manager, and Lakshmikanthan, president, Thanjavur District Pensioners' Association, participated.

Aavin's offer

THANJAVUR: Aavin here has introduced `Mysore pau' sweet specially for Deepavali this year.

M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, Collector, launched the sale of the packet at the Collectorate here on Friday.

According to the Collector and R. Rasa Pakkiyam, Managing Director, Thanjavur District Milk Producers Co-operative Union (Aavin), the sweet is prepared using pure ghee. Packets are kept for sale at all Aavin milk booths.

A 250 gm packet costs Rs.35. People can also purchase milk, ghee, butter, milk `peda' and milk powder from the booths.

The union has been supplying milk to consumers by procuring milk from co-operative societies of milk producers in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.

For bulk orders for occasions such as weddings and for subscribing to monthly cards, consumers can write to Aavin, Nanjikottai Road, Thanjavur - 6 or call 255588, 255379, and 255686.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur Dam stood at 120.01 feet on Saturday.

The inflow was 45,521 cusecs and the discharge 45,534 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Deposit savings in post offices: Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday appealed to the people to open savings accounts in post offices and deposit their savings to bring prosperity to their families and the nation.

In a message issued on the eve of the World Thrift Day, she said public savings helped in implementing welfare schemes and in improving basic amenities, thereby paving the way for the country's economic development. — Special Correspondent

Police postings

CHENNAI: Narinderpal Singh, Inspector-General of Police, is the new Commissioner of Madurai city. He has been posted in the existing vacancy, in the transfer and posting of police officers on Saturday. Till now, the Commissioner's post was held by officers in the rank of Deputy Inspector-General (DIG). Mr. Singh was hitherto with the Special Investigation Cell of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Chennai.

The Government also shuffled a few DIGs. S.S. Krishnamoorthy who was DIG, Prisons, Chennai, has been transferred and posted as DIG, Kancheepuram range, in the place of S.G. Rajendran, who is on leave. M. Ravi, who was DIG, Dindigul range, has been posted as DIG, Armed Police, Chennai. K. Nandabalan, DIG, Crime Branch CID (SIT), Chennai, is the new DIG, Ramanathapuram range, vice A.X. Alexander Mohan, who has been posted to the Dindigul Range.

Three drowned in Palar

VELLORE: Three teenagers who went for swimming in the Palar river at Pachakuppam near Ambur were drowned in the river on Saturday. The body of one of them had been retrieved. Collector S. Gopalakrishnan said though water was flowing only up to two feet above the river bed, in some places, because of pits created by mining of sand the depth was more. He appealed to the public not to go for swimming. — Special Correspondent

Last date for degree certificates

CHENNAI: Students who have qualified for the undergraduate, postgraduate, professional, diploma and certificate programme courses offered by the Institute of Distance Education, University of Madras, and have not applied for their degree certificates can do so before December 31, a release here said.

Applications can be made in the prescribed form along with the following fee, without any cumulative penal fee, to the Controller of Examinations, enclosing a demand draft drawn in favour of the Director, IDE, University of Madras.

The fee for provisional certificate is Rs. 125 and for convocation and degree certificates the fee is Rs. 925 (for those who have passed between 1983 and 1999) and Rs. 675 (for those who have passed between 2000 and 2004). — Special Correspondent

Revised IA schedules

CHENNAI: Indian Airlines has combined/rescheduled some of its services for deepavali on October 31, November 1, 3, and 4. According to a release, on October 31, the Chennai-Delhi and the return flight (IC-430/IC-440) have been combined. Flight IC-947 on the Chennai-Hyderabad sector and the flight (IC-840) on the Hyderabad-Delhi sector have been combined with the service IC-539. Flights IC-432/431 on the Hyderabad-Delhi-Hyderabad sector have been cancelled.

On November 3 and 4, the services (IC-432/431) on the Hyderabad-Delhi-Hyderabad sector have been cancelled. — Special Correspondent

Held for rash driving

Tuticorin : The police have arrested Thangadurai (34), driver of a private bus, on the charge of driving the vehicle in a negligent manner and dashing against a Tamil Nadu State Corporation-owned bus at Pudukottai near here on Friday.

The police said the private bus hit the State-owned bus while it was standing at Sirupadu bus-stop. The front portion of both buses were damaged. — Staff Reporter.

Wire stolen

Tuticorin : The police are looking out for some unknown persons who had stolen aluminum wire from the electricity distribution line at Perurani near here recently.

The police said that an investigation was launched into the incident, based on a complaint lodged by Karan Singh, Assistant Engineer, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, on Saturday that 2,600 metre long wire had been missing from the distribution line since October 24. — Staff Reporter.

Gamblers nabbed

Tuticorin : The police have arrested nine gamblers from different parts of the district during day-long raids conducted on Friday.

According to the police, Mariappan (33), Muthupandi (37), Kalidas (38), Krishnan (47), and Velmurugan (28), were taken into custody while they were gambling at places under the Thermal Nagar police station limits.

Meanwhile, Marimuthu (33), along with three others, was arrested from Satankulam area. All accused were remanded to judicial custody. — Staff Reporter.

Injured in accident

Tuticorin : Muthusamy, a resident of Muniasamypuram Extension, was injured when a speeding lorry hit him while he was crossing the Victoria Extension road here on Friday. He was admitted to a hospital here. The police have arrested lorry driver Kannan (30). — Staff Reporter.

Girl kidnapped

Tuticorin : The police are looking out for Shahul Hameed, who had allegedly kidnapped a 24-year-old girl here recently.

The police said that the accused had kidnapped Mahalakshmi while she was on her way to her friend's house on October 20.

The investigation was launched on the basis of a complaint lodged by one Chandramouli Nadar at the Central Police station here on Friday. — Staff Reporter.
