Three killed, five injured as wall collapses

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Three persons, including a 12-year-old boy, were killed and five others suffered injuries when the compound wall of a house collapsed due to heavy rain and the debris fell over two houses at Chintalmet under the Rajendranagar police limits early on Saturday.

The 5-ft compound wall of the house, belonging to one Mohammed Baba Mia, collapsed around 7.30 a.m. and the debris came crashing down over the two houses situated on a slope adjacent to Mia's house.

The asbestos roofs of the houses were shattered under the impact and the rubble fell over the inmates of the two houses killing P. Jangaiah (35) and his wife P. Shobha (30) along with Shiva Prasad (12) who was in the next house. Shiva Prasad was the son of Sattaiah, a labourer who had left for work, when the accident occurred.

Locals rushed the injured persons to Osmania General Hospital. They include Jangaiah's children — Srikanth (7), Prashanth (5) and Varalakshmi (9) — apart from P. Shanker Rao (65) and P. Saiamma (60). The condition of Srikanth and Saiamma was stated to be serious.

Victims' cries

"It was raining heavily all night. We were asleep when the wall collapsed," said Mia, who along with his family members rushed out on hearing the cries of the victims. Mia, a driver with the district administration, has been staying there for six years.

"We heard a thud and I realised something went wrong. I came out of my house and found Jangaiah and his family struggling to come out of the rubble. By the time we managed to rescue some of them, Jangaiah and Shobha died. In the other house, we saw Shiva Prasad crushed under the stones," recalled Vishwanatham, a neighbour.
