Special Correspondent

Train accident at Veligonda

HYDERABAD: Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu has announced jobs in the Railways to one eligible member in each of the families of those killed in the train accident at Veligonda on Saturday.

This is the first that time in the history of Railways that employment is offered as compensation to the families of the deceased, he said. The families would also get a monetary benefit of Rs. 5 lakhs — Rs. 1 lakh as ex-gratia, to be immediately disbursed, and Rs. 4 lakhs through the Railway Claims Tribunal.

Mr. Velu flew in straight to the Secretariat here by a helicopter after a visit to the accident site along with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, APCC president K. Keshav Rao and Finance Minister K. Rosaiah.

Addressing a press conference jointly, the Chief Minister and Mr. Velu said rescue and relief teams were at the site within about 80 minutes of the accident that occurred at 4.40 a.m.
