Rains caused disaster: Lalu

Special Correspondent

Patna: Railway Minister Lalu Prasad attributed Saturday's accident to the Repalle-Secunderabad Passenger in Andhra Pradesh to rains lashing the coastal regions for the past few days. Flash floods breached a dam and washed away a small bridge and rail track, causing derailment.

Mr. Prasad directed his Minister of State, R.Velu, to supervise the rescue and relief operations by the Army and the Navy.

Expressing sorrow over the "major national disaster", he left it to Mr. Velu to announce a compensation package to the affected families.

The railway officials reached the site and a formal enquiry would be held.
