BELLARY: Bellary Rural police have arrested four persons on the charge of intercepting lorries and escaping in them after assaulting the driver. The accused used to sell the goods in the lorries and later abandon the vehicles, it is said. Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Thakur told presspersons here on Saturday that the four persons intercepted a lorry on June 13 near Donekal in Anantapur district by blocking the road and got into the vehicle after brandishing a machete. They left the driver and the cleaner with their hands tied at Kuditini in Bellary district and escaped in the lorry loaded with cement. Later, they disposed of the cement worth Rs. 36,000 to Nagabhushan in Kampli for Rs. 30,000 and abandoned the lorry near Hebbattam village in Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Thakur added. He said that on Friday night, the police got information that four persons were trying to stop lorries near the GESCOM station on Moka road. A police team reached the spot and arrested the accused. The arrested were identified as Jagadish Babu (26), a resident of Arakativemula village, Tadpatri district, and Rajendra Prasad (33), Siddaiah (19) and Oblesh (19) all residents of Anantapur. During interrogation, the arrested revealed that they had committed similar offences, including two in Andhra Pradesh and one near Kolar. Nagabhushan, who purchased the cement, has also been arrested, Mr. Thakur said.
Drunken driving
The district police have launched a drive against drunken driving. So far, over 40 cases have been booked in Bellary and Hospet, Mr. Thakur said. He said the drive will be extended to all towns and cities in the district to create awareness among people about the dangers of drunken driving.
Squad
He said an enforcement squad has been formed to ensure that vehicle owners follow traffic rules. Cases will be booked against those who violate the rules, be it use of shrill horns, over speeding, parking in no-parking zones, or driving without a licence, he said. Constables have been issued tags to be affixed to vehicles parked in no-parking zones and a copy with details of the registration number of the vehicle will be forwarded to the police, he said. Notices will be issued to the erring vehicle owners, Mr. Thakur added. Mr. Thakur appealed to people to follow traffic rules and cooperate with the police.
