Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: Mr L. Joseph Mariadoss, Chairman of Pondicherry Government-owned gas-based Power Corporation at T.R. Pattinam near Karaikal, has said that the services of the Power Finance Corporation, New Delhi would be sought to effect a wage revision for both the technical and non-technical staff. Addressing newsmen here on Saturday Mr. Mariadoss, a former Education Minister, said the Corporation had never taken a negative stand whenever demands for upward revision of the pay structures were made by the employees and workers. It was a matter of concern that the members of Employees Union resorted to fast in a bid to press their demands. Asserting that initially an Administrative Officer had got to be posted in the Corporation who would coordinate the process of the revision of wage structure in collaboration with the Power Finance Corporation, he said he had written to the Government in this regard.
No room for stir
He was against agitation by any section of the Corporation, as power was an essential sector. Mr Mariadoss said the Corporation should not feel compelled to invoke the provisions of Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) in the larger interest of smooth working of the corporation. The project had been a profitable undertaking since its inception, almost a decade ago, and had been paying dividends continuously. The Managing Director of the Corporation, S. Sankara Raman, said the Corporation had registered capacity utilisation up to 96 to 97 per cent (load factor). The annual production of power was 260 million units, the target fixed by the Centre. There was a proposal to have an additional power plant with a production capacity of 100 MW. Mr Mariadoss said that the corporation was meeting nearly 60 per cent of power requirements of Karaikal. The Corporation had paid bonus to all categories of workers at 40 per cent against 35 per cent paid last year and as much as Rs 12 lakhs was disbursed for bonus payment for Diwali and there was no discrimination among the employees in paying the maximum of Rs 11,000.
