Annamalai DPE, SN win

ALUVA: Annamalai University's Department of Physical Education men and SN College (Kollam) women won the 14th Dr A.K. Baby South India inter-collegiate hockey tournament which concluded at the UC College Ground here on Saturday.

U.V. Mujeeb Rehman's sixth-minute strike helped Annamalai DPE down YMCA College 1-0 while SN retained the women's title pipping YMCA College (Chennai) with a superior goal average. The two teams had finished level with seven points in the four-team league.

The results: Men's final: DPE, Annamalai University, Chidambaram 1 (U.V. Mujeeb Rehman, 6th minute) bt YMCA College of Physical Education, Chennai 0.

Women's four-team league: YMCA CoPE bt DPE 4-3; SN, Kollam bt UC, Aluva 3-0.

SKVC triumphs

Sree Kerala Varma College, the host, defeated defending champion St Thomas College by 55 runs and won the Calicut University inter-zone cricket championship after a six-year break at thrissur on Saturday.

The scores: SKVC, Thrissur 214 in 39.4 overs (Sreejith 56, Shinto 40, Vineeth three for 30) bt St Thomas, Thrissur 159 in 36.3 overs (Davis Manavalan 50, Anoop three for 23).

Thiruvananthapuram in last eight

Holder Thiruvananthapuram entered the boys' quarterfinals of the State junior baseball championship at Kozhikode on Saturday.

The results (preliminary league):

Boys: Pool A: Thiruvananthapuram bt Idukki 14-0; Thiruvananthapuram bt Pathanamthitta 6-5. Pool B: Ernakulam bt Alappuzha 10-0. Pool C: Kozhikode bt Wayanad 10-0. Pool D: Kannur bt Kottayam 18-5.

Girls: Pool A: Ernakulam bt Kannur 7-5; Ernakulam bt Palakkad 8-1. Pool B: Kasargod bt Kozhikode 9-8; Alappuzha bt Kasargod 11-9. — Principal Correspondent

TMNSS triumphs

TMNSS College, Dhanuvchapuram and College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram won the team titles in the men's and women's sections respectively in the Kerala University inter-collegiate Air Rifle shooting championship held at the LNCPE, Kariyavattom here on Saurday.

R.H. Aneesh of VTMNSS College took the individual title in the men's section with 51 points while S. Asha of College of Engineering took the top honours in women's section.

Ernakulam district volleyball

The Ernakulam District senior volleyball championship begins at the Pappan Stadium, Varapuzha, on Sunday.

Some of the best teams in the country, including National League runner-up Kochi Refineries Limited, Cochin Port Trust, Indian Navy and Kochi Customs will figure in the men's event.

Defending champion St. Xavier's College (Aluva), SNM (Maliankara), Vypeen Volleyball Academy, SGDC (Nayarambalam) are some of the prominent teams which will be seen in action in the women's section. The championship concludes on November 6. — Principal Correspondent

Inter-collegiate basketball

The 44th Mar Ivanios Tophy inter-collegiate basketball tournament will be held at the Mar Ivanios floodlit stadium from November 28 to December 2. Ernakulam District under-13 cricket

The trials to select the Ernakulam District under-13 cricket team will be held at the Maharaja's College Stadium at 9 a.m. on November 1. Players, born on or after September 1, 1992 and studying in regular school, are eligible to take part. Players, in whites and with cricket kit, are to report at the venue with age certificates.
