WATER WOES: Tobacco crop inundated by rain near Pamulapadu in Kurnool district.
KURNOOL: The incessant rain in the last two days left a trail of destruction in Kurnool district. Crops on about one-lakh acres were affected by the flood and rain. Over a dozen colonies in Atmakur and Nandyal were affected as floodwater entered the houses. The administration set up relief camps at both places to provide food and accommodation to over 1,000 people. In Atmakur town, colonies on the banks of Gundlakamma rivulet were flooded. Ekalavya Nagar, Garib Nagar, Urban Colony, AVM Palem, SPG Palem, Kothapet, AVR Nagar, Veerabhara Nagar and other places were affected. Revenue officials who visited the colonies asked the local panchayat to immediately take up deepening of the rivulet in the town limits for free flow of floodwater. Encroachment and silting of the riverbed blocked the flow of water.
Tanks full
The Varadarajulu Swamy project on Munimadugulavagu near Atmakur discharged 7,000 cusecs due to flood to the river. All tanks in the area were filled to the brim. In Nandyal, Kundu river received heavy floods due to rain in the catchment area. Salimnagar, Nandamuri Nagar and Harijanawada were cut off from the rest of the town while five other colonies were affected. Orvakal mandal had the maximum crop damage with 18,000 acres. Damages to houses were also reported to be serious. Srisailam received the highest rainfall of 186.7 mm, Jupadu Bungalow 108.4 mm, Velugodu 107.6 mm, Gadivemula 99.8 mm and Pagidyala 97 mm. The district recorded an average rainfall of 43.1 mm.
Villagers breach tank
Residents of Kurukunda village near Atmakur breached minor irrigation tank as floodwaters threatened to inundate the village. Farmers reported created a breach measuring 15 metres wide to relieve the pressure. Irrigation tanks were damaged at five more places in the district due to heavy rains. According to an estimate, crops on 1.56 lakh acres were damaged in the flooding. Also, 4,170 houses were destroyed in Kurnool and Nandyal division. Of them, 576 houses were destroyed completely.
