`Healthy competition in educational sector needed'

Chandy says quality of education needs to be improved



IN KEEPING WITH TRADITION: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy being received at Sree Narayana Vidya Mandir in Kannur on Saturday. Mr. Chandy inaugurated the valedictory function of the school's Silver Jubilee celebrations.

KANNUR: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said that the Government favoured healthy competition between the Government/aided and unaided institutions in the education sector.

Inaugurating the valedictory function marking the culmination of the silver jubilee celebration of the Sree Narayana Vidya Mandir here on Saturday, the Chief Minister said that though the State had achieved a lot in the field of education, more had to be done in the field of higher education and to improve quality. The State was in need of quality education, he said adding that the healthy competition between the two sectors of education would only help the Government/aided institutions enhance quality, he said.

Stating that the Government could not ignore the Government/aided institutions, he said those institutions had played a vital role in the educational progress of the State.

Recalling the advice of Sree Narayana Guru on acquiring knowledge, Mr. Chandy said that the 21st century was a knowledge century. A society or an individual could progress only through knowledge, he added.

K. P. Balakrishnan, president of the Sree Bhakti Samvardini Yogam, which is running the Sree Narayana Mandir, presided over the function. Brahmasri Swaroopananda Swami of Sivagiri Mutt blessed the occasion. K. Sudhakaran, MLA, K. K. Narayanan, District Panchayat president, K.S. Srinivas, District Collector, and K. Upendran, municipal chairman were also present at the function.
