Arrangements for Ramzan

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: Elaborate arrangements are being made for the country's biggest Ramzan congregation to be held here on Sunday. According to Ma'dinu Ssaquafathil Islamiyya, which organises the annual event, over five lakh Sunnis are expected to attend the function.

The day-and-night-long event will be marked by various prayers and sermons. Separate areas have been demarcated for namaz. The organisers said a mass feast would be held at sunset for people coming from distant areas.

Volunteers will man the 100-odd counters offering various facilities to the participants. The travel requirements of the participants will be taken care of at the counters. A medical counter has been set up with the support of Orchid K.P.M. Hospital.

Medical team

A medical team will be deployed to take care of emergencies. Exclusive counters have been set up to take care of non-resident Indians as well as foreign participants.

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has sanctioned special stops on Sunday for its town-to-town (TT) and fast passenger (FP) services at Swalat Nagar, Melmuri.

The police have been deployed in strength to maintain law and order. A unit of the fire brigade will be on standby at the venue.

Vehicular traffic

Vehicular traffic will be diverted in the evening from Valluvambram and Tirurkkad. Kozhikode-bound vehicles from Perinthalmanna will have to divert from Tirurkkad via Anakkayam and Manjeri to reach Valluvambram. Malappuram-bound vehicles from Kozhikode will have to divert from Valluvambram towards Manjeri. About two lakh food packets will be arranged for those who come from distant places. Last year, 1.5 lakh packets were distributed.

The Ma'din has launched a variety of charity programmes as part of its anniversary prayer meet. As part of a programme called Karunyathinte Kaineettam, 100 gold sovereigns will be given to 100 orphan girls. The organisation has given away 350 gold sovereigns to girls hailing from poor families.
