Experiment in organic farming to be extended

Staff Reporter

Good results from trial on 100 hectares in each district

  • Three-day trade fair on organic farming from November 4
  • Goal is to develop an assured market for farmers
  • World market for organic produce estimated at $35 billion

Bangalore: Encouraged by the success of the organic farming experiment on 100 ha in each of the 27 districts, the State Government is now extending it to all the 175 taluks.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday on the three-day India Organic-2005 international trade fair being organised here, Agricultural Minister K. Srinivasa Gowda said farmers, who grew produce using organic manure got good yields.

    Cheaper

Organic farming is cheaper than using chemical fertilisers. Each acre of land needs ten tonnes of organic manure for which farmers have to raise cattle and sheep. He said India Organic-2005, the first trade fair of its kind in the country, will begin on November 4 at Lalbagh here.

Mr. Gowda said that the goal is to create a common platform for buyers, sellers and others interested in organic produce so as to provide an assured market to farmers for their produce.
