Engineers allege harassment

BIDAR: Members of the Panchayat Raj Engineers' Association have decided to go on a strike from November 7 to protest against the alleged harassment of engineers by some gram panchayat presidents and their relatives.

In separate complaints to Superintendent of Police K.L. Sudhir, the association office-bearers said junior engineers have been assaulted in Aurad and Humnabad taluks by relatives of gram panchayat members or presidents.

The offenders should be punished and security should be provided to the officials, said a press release by the association. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested on gambling charge

RAICHUR: Sindhanur police arrested Durgamma, Moula and Adibasappa on the charge of gambling and recovered Rs. 3,460 from them in Sindhanur town on Friday. All of them have been remanded in judicial custody.

Scholarships distributed

BIDAR: Development Commissioner, Backward Classes, A.K. Monappa distributed scholarships to 73 pre-university and college students in Bidar on Friday.

The scholarships are sponsored by the Bangalore-based Infosys Foundation, the Raichur-based Prerana and the Bidar-based Dari. Scholarships totalling Rs. 2.23 lakhs were distributed among 21 students from Bidar, 15 from Humnabad, 26 from Basava Kalyan, 12 from Bhalki and 11 from Aurad taluks. Nehru Yuva Kendra convener Govindrao Nayak and others were present, said a press release. — Staff Correspondent

Lokayukta traps official

BIDAR: Lokayukta officials trapped the District Fire Force Officer while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 1,500 from a firecracker vendor in Bidar on Saturday.

P.K. Poshte, the vendor, had complained to the Lokayukta that the official, Srikant Rao, had demanded Rs. 1,500 to award a no-objection certificate to open a firecracker stall. A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act. — Staff Correspondent

Camp for physically challenged

BIDAR: Experts will fix artificial limbs and callipers to physically challenged persons at a free camp to be held here on November 6 and 7.

Rotary Club of Bidar is organising the camp in association with the National Marwari Trust and Seth Vithaldas Malani Trust. HUBLI: The Dharwad district police seized spirit worth Rs. 40,000 being transported illegally in a tanker on Friday night.

Zoo will be open on November 1

MYSORE: Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens and Karanji Nature Park in Mysore will remain open on November 1, Deepavali day, for the benefit of the general public. Though the zoo does not have a holiday for Deepavali, the festival falls on Tuesday, which is the zoo's weekly holiday, executive director of the zoo Manoj Kumar said in a press statement. — Staff Correspondent

Speed post passport facility at Hunsur

MYSORE: A new speed post passport processing centre at Hunsur Post Office will become operational from November 2. According to a press statement from Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Mysore Division, the centre will sell passport applications from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and accept filled applications from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Assistance will be provided for filling up the application forms, the statement added. — Staff Correspondent

Change in timings

MYSORE: Karnataka State Open University's (KSOU) distance education learning programme on Gyan Vani, which used to be broadcast from 7 p.m., will be broadcast from 8 p.m. with effect from November 1. According to a press statement, distance learning lessons of Indira Gandhi National Open University, which used to be broadcast from 8 p.m., will be broadcast from 7 p.m. from Novermber 1. The repeat broadcast of IGNOU lessons will be at 7 a.m., KSOU lessons at 8 a.m. "The broadcast will be available on 105.2 MHzs," the release said. — Staff Correspondent

Venkaiah Naidu visits inundated areas

Bangalore: Bharatiya Janata Party Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu has said that

he will impress on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to approve a bigger relief package for Karnataka to tackle the problems in the rain-hit areas.

After a visit to some of the low-lying areas in Bangalore on Saturday, Mr. Naidu, along with BJP national General Secretary Ananth Kumar, MP, distributed foodgrains, blankets and bread to people at Puttenahalli. Supersede Belgaum Corporation: Vatal

Bangalore: The Kannada Chaluvaligar leader Vatal Nagaraj has demanded the supersession of the Belgaum City Corporation for adopting a resolution favouring the merger of that city and Nippani taluk with Maharashtra.

He met Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh on Friday and suggested the holding of a session of the legislature in Belgaum every year on the lines of the Maharashtra legislature holding sessions in Nagpur (which was the capital of the erstwhile Central Provinces). — Special Correspondent

half-yearly results

Bangalore: Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML) has announced a net profit of Rs. 41.49 crores for the first half-year period ended September 30, notching a growth of 68 per cent over the corresponding period last year. The company clocked a sales turnover of Rs. 786 crores during the first six months, a BEML release said.

For the second quarter of 2005-06, the company recorded a sales turnover of Rs. 383 crores and a net profit of Rs. 29.08 crores as compared to Rs. 19.46 crores a year earlier. — Special Correspondent

Dead artiste gets invitation

BELLARY: The Department of Kannada and Culture has committed a faux pas by inviting a dead person to give a performance at Hampi Utsav, a three-day festival of dance, drama and music in Hampi from November 3.

The name of the late Kalavva Jogti, a recipient of the Rajyotsava Award, also finds a mention in the list of artistes invited to participate in the "Janapada Lalavahini," a colourful procession of artistes of various folk forms that will be taken out on the concluding day of the utsav (November 5). Youth Congress to hold `Chaitanya Samavesha'

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada Youth Congress unit will hold a "Chaitanya Samavesha" on the occasion of the 21st death anniversary of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Moodbidri on October 31. District Youth Congress President Jagannath Shetty Bondala told presspersons here on Saturday that Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh and KPCC President M. Mallikarjun Kharge will take part in the samavesha.

The Youth Congress will use this platform to appeal to Congress leaders to give prominence to members of the Youth Congress while selecting candidates to contest the panchayat elections. — Special Correspondent

Power shutdown

HUBLI: Due to the shifting of the 33 KV line at Lakamanahalli near Kittur, power supply to the following places in and around Dharwad will be affected on Sunday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a release.

The areas affected are Hiremalligawada, Chikkamalligawada, Narendra, Dasanakoppa, Mulamuttal, Mangalagatti, Mummigatti, Garag, Agasanahalli, Dubbanamaradi, Lokur, Kotabagi, Tadakoda, Jirigewada, Hangaraki, Khanapur, SLN Distillery, MM Industry, TELCO, WALMI, Narendra Ginning Factory, Jai Laxmi Industry, Airtek and nearby places. — Staff Correspondent

Milk producers' rally

Sirsi: More than 500 milk producers of Uttara Kannada district held a protest rally on Saturday against delay in linking Uttara Kannada District milk producers' union with the Dakshina Kannada Milk Union. Earlier, the union was linked to Dharwad milk. Producers want to join Dakshina Kannada Milk Union as they can get Rs. 2.50 more than the Dharwad union. They presently get Rs. 8 per a milk in Dharwad whereas they get Rs. 10. 25 a litre for milk supplied to the Dakshina Kannada Milk union. — Correspondent
