127 persons get Rajyotsava Award

Staff Reporter

Vysaraya Ballal, Vaishali Kasaravalli, Mallepuram G. Venkatesh among the recipients

BANGALORE: To mark the golden jubilee of the formation of the State, the Government has apparently exhibited its generosity to extend the Rajyotsava Award to a record 127 persons, including the former Additional Chief Secretary Chiranjeevi Singh, noted writers Vysaraya Ballal and Mallepuram G. Venkatesh, musician Vidyabhushana, the former chief photographer of The Hindu (Bangalore) T.L. Prabhakar, cricketer Sunil Joshi, director and actress Vaishali Kasaravalli and film-maker T.N. Seetaram in 21 categories.

Announcing the names, Deputy Chief Minster M.P. Prakash told presspersons here on Saturday that a committee headed by him and comprising Secretary (Kannada and Culture) Usha Ganesh, Director Muddu Mohan, chairpersons of the Sahitya, Sangeeta and Nritya, and Nataka academies, selected the persons in recognition of their contribution in their respective fields. It also discussed the list twice with the Chief Minister. N. Dharam Singh. The committee has applied the yardstick of geographical representation, caste, social justice, age and merit for the selection, he said.

Responding to questions, he admitted that the Government wished to limit the award to 80 persons, but considering the 50th anniversary of the formation of the State it wanted to be liberal. in giving away the awards. Although he was not fully happy, the Government had made efforts to recognise deserving persons, he claimed.

Although the list gives a general picture that majority of the awards had been given to persons residing in Bangalore, they originally hailed from different parts of the State, he clarified.

Asked whether the Government would add some more names in compliance with the tradition it set in the previous year, the Deputy Chief Minister replied in the negative.
