Three get life term for murder

Kozhikode: The Kozhikode Second Additional Sessions Court has sentenced three activists of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) to life imprisonment on charges of murdering a CITU activist, Madathil Aboobaker.

Delivering the verdict, Judge A.M. Babu also slapped a penalty of Rs. 20,000 each on the accused, M.Abdul Naser, Suresh Kumar and A.Krishnan.

If they fail to remit the penalty, they will have to spend an additional two years in prison. The court found them guilty under Section 301 (culpable homicide), 341 (wrongful confinement), 323(causing hurt using dangerous weapons) of the Indian penal Code (IPC).

An amount of Rs. 50,000 will be paid to the next of kin of the deceased. Fourth accused in the case T.Balan was acquitted for want of evidence.

Aboobaker was murdered at 4.30 p.m. at Thottathil Kadavu Junction on June 30, 1999. The case relates to the outcome of a conflict between the trade unions at the Thiruvambady Estate. Additional Public Prosecutor P.M. Niyas appeared for the prosecution.
