Cherukad Award presented

PERINTHALMANNA: The Cherukad Award for literature was given to poet Manamboor Rajan Babu at a function held here on Friday evening. Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener Paloli Mohammedkutty inaugurated the function. LDF deputy leader in the Assembly Kodiyeri Balakrishnan gave away the award, comprising Rs.10,000 and a citation.

Simplify law, says Governor

THALASSERY: Governor R.L. Bhatia has underlined the importance of making law more people-friendly. Inaugurating the valedictory function of the bicentenary celebration of the Thalassery courts here on Saturday, the Governor said that no country could survive without a stable law. Law was an instrument for social change, he said adding that the real challenge before the judiciary and the Bar was to make law more people-friendly.

Visas to boost health tourism

NEDUMBASSERY: Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi has said that the Ministry is considering issue of one-year visas to exploit the health-tourism potential of the country. She told presspersons at the airport here that under the National Rural Health Mission, a combination of Ayurvedic and Allopathic treatment would be provided from the level of primary health centres. In the first phase, the combined treatment facility would be provided in 17 States. South Indian States would be covered in the next phase. The Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Sidha and Homeopathy would extend Rs. 5 lakhs each to Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing units with a view to promote the Ayurveda industry. Ayurvedic treatment would be introduced in trauma care centres, she added. The Minister will inaugurate the fifth State convention of Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturers' Organisation of India in Thrissur on Sunday.

BSNL scheme

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Registration for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) post-paid CellOne (Plan 100) cellular phone connections for employees of the Union and State governments and Central public sector units will start on Wednesday at the customer service centres on Uppalam Road, at Statue and Central Telephone Exchange, and the near Government Press, Thiruvananthapuram. No activation charge and registration fee is required. The scheme is offered to pensioners and those covered under the family-pension scheme.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Prime Minister's high-level committee set up to find out the social, economic and educational status of Muslims in the country would visit Kerala and hold discussions with those concerned next month. It will be in Kozhikode on November 9 and 10 and Thiruvananthapuram on November 14 and 15.

Elephant lovers' demand

Thrissur: The Elephant Lovers' Association (Ana Premi Sanghom) has demanded that inquest should be prepared in cases involving elephants. In a complaint submitted to the Deputy Inspector General of Police, the association also demanded that the post-mortem examination of all elephants should be recorded on video and the vital organs preserved and sent for test at the Institute of Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad. — Staff Reporter

Cultural programmes

Thrissur : The Navaneetham Cultural Trust plans to organise a series of cultural programmes, titled `Bharathakala Yatra', in different parts of the country to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of Kerala. The `Bharathakala Yatra' will begin with a Bharatanatyam recital by Rajashree Warrier, paying homage to Swati Tirunal, at the Regional Theatre here on November 5. The show will include the dance adaptation of some of the rare compositions of Swati Tirunal.
