MYSORE: Making a pitch for autonomy for cooperatives, Chairman of Regional Institute of Cooperative Management B.S. Vishwanathan called for liberation of cooperatives from external control and politics. Delivering the keynote address at the inauguration of the two-day national-level seminar on "Cooperative legal framework in the new millennium" at the Educational Multi Media Research Centre at Manasagangothri here on Friday, Mr. Vishwanathan said cooperatives were becoming increasingly politicised, much to their own detriment. Pointing out that the autonomy of cooperatives was protected by constitutional provisions in a number of countries, Mr. Vishwanathan said cooperatives in India were suffering on account of Government interference. "Cooperatives without democratic management are not genuine cooperatives. They are merely Government cooperatives," he said. Claiming that most cooperative societies are floundering on account of certain Government sponsored programmes, which are economically unviable, Mr. Vishwanathan felt only cooperatives, which had economically sound programmes, will survive in the new millennium. President of Karnataka State Cooperative Federation Ltd., Bangalore, G.T. Deve Gowda, former Minister Leeladevi R. Prasad, and President of Mysore District Credit Cooperative Bank Ltd. C. Basave Gowda, were present on the occasion. The seminar was organised jointly by the Karnataka State Cooperative Federation Ltd., Bangalore, and Department of Economics and Cooperation, University of Mysore.
