HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was perhaps the first in Hyderabad to know about the train tragedy. He anxiously woke up from bed to pick up a call at 4.50 a.m. from Congress MP representing Tenali V. Balashoury informing him of the accident. A series of calls followed from the Chief Minister. Dr. Reddy telephoned Chief Secretary T.K. Dewan, DGP Swaranjit Sen, DIG, Intelligence, and Collector and SP of Nalgonda district, telling them about the tragedy with the instruction to "rush," sources told The Hindu . The impact of the orders was such that local DSP reached the spot by 5.20 a.m. By 6 a.m., a group of officials made themselves available even as villagers struggled to save passengers trapped in coaches. Very little could be done initially, as any operation required cranes, gas cutting machines and boats.
